Dave Mann, Nadhiir Carrim, Stuart ... talk about how DVSA oversees ADI quality

1.7 million category B tests are conducted annually and the UK has typically had c.40k ADIs.  But applications for PDI have risen (from 7.5k/year to now c.20k).  So perhaps 50-60k ADIs could be expected, with each having far fewer clients.

49 ADI Examiners cover the UK.  As with all Civil Service employees, they undergo constant training (such as on ADAS and neurodiversity) and are assessed at least once per quarter.  At least one Standards Check successfully passed "without a word being spoken": both pupil and ADI were deaf!

The process to qualify as ADI is two years for a reason.  Do not expect guaranteed income when a PDI: that phase is for merely gaining experience.  Broaden experience by teaching for free (for example, relatives of friends): it could improve your chance of qualifying as an ADI.

Ideally, there should be around 1000 ORDIT trainers available.
But ORDIT (the Official Register of Driving Instructor Trainers) remains paused, so PDIs must seek training from ADIs.  DVSA can’t interfere with third-party teaching.  DVSA is not offering extensions on PDIs' pink licenses.  However, Part 3s on "book to hold" can be done shortly after the 2 year qualifying period.

To become an ADI, the main competencies to demonstrate at Part 3 are planning, safety, and learning.  Get plenty of background info, such as do they get private practice and what sort?  Take up to 10 min to carefully brief the ADI examiner about the pupil.  The plan in the assessed lesson "should fit around the pupil” at all stages; try your best to "work it round" for them.  Explicitly share the responsibility for the drive: expect it to move to and fro but state that clearly.  Don’t always stop to debrief a serious fault: "situational appropriateness" is how to deal with it, and how it will be assessed.

What would an examiner do?

I called at the test centre and asked an examiner this question when the fire extinguisher in the rear footwell got punctured at the start of a driving lesson (could have been a test).

You can see the resulting mess.  Interestingly, he STILL replied in the usual way: "I'd have to be there to say what I'd do".

Fair enough; it could become a matter of test timing rather than test safety.  (The dust had settled after two minutes with the windows open).

The video on this page illustrates a multi-car scenario but poses the same question ...

Who's editing this BADIs website?

4/3/2025

Basically, anyone with editing privilege.  Today, Tim met Farzana (another BADIs committee member) and set her up so that members can be reassured that at least two individuals can now independently keep this site going :)

What a privilege to learn here (in 1981), when at college nearby ...

Kim Gibson and Vicky Ambrose talk on managing your business, February 2025

4/2/2025

Your business = income + social help.  ADIs expect a uniform income/lifestyle, or one that's always increasing.  Instead, decide what lifestyle you want, hence need to earn (gross), hence net income, hence hours and rate.  Block-booking is easier for everyone, but justify the discount to your clients.  Consider PAYG pricing.  Avoid an “arms race of discounts”.  Have a regular diary structure.  Operate a holding account to avoid any risk of the DVSA Registrar striking you off, otherwise you may have no buffer from which to refund clients who've prepaid.

Common utterances...
"So it's kind of managing my …"
"... as long as you do what's right for you"
"You might turn around and …"
"What's the other thing I was going to say about …?"
"Does that make sense?"
"... and you're kinda like"
"100%"

[anecdotes of others' experience]
[tautological and slow (but little “umming”… ADIs need these (more than most)?]
